AVALON, NJ – David Richter, Republican candidate running to represent New Jersey’s Second Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives, announced today that he has received the endorsements of Atlantic County Freeholders John Risley and Richard Dase.
The Second District includes all of Atlantic, Cape May, Cumberland and Salem counties as well as parts of Burlington, Camden, Gloucester and Ocean counties. Atlantic County, with approximately 265,000 residents, is the largest county in the district.
Freeholder Risley said, “We have a great opportunity next year to take back this congressional seat from the Democrats and David is the best candidate to make that happen. I look forward to campaigning with him as we work together to ensure a GOP victory in 2020.”
Freeholder Dase added, “While the primary is many months away, David has clearly demonstrated that he has the strong conservative principles to represent the Second District in Congress and I look forward to working with David to help make him our next Congressman.”
“John and Rich are the first freeholders from any county in the district to make endorsements in this primary race and I am honored that they have decided to support my campaign for Congress,” said Richter. “Jeff Van Drew is one of the most vulnerable Democrats in Congress and I will be working hard to ensure that he is defeated next November,” added Richter.
President Donald Trump won the district by five points in 2016 and Republican U.S. Senate candidate Bob Hugin won it by ten points in 2018, while Van Drew barely won the district last year with only 52.9% of the vote despite outspending his Republican opponent by more than six-to-one.
“Despite running as an alleged conservative Democrat, Van Drew has voted with Speaker Nancy Pelosi 91% of the time and with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez 84% of the time. He is voting against the interests of small and family-owned businesses, he is voting against the interests of law-abiding gun owners, and he is voting against the interests of working families. The citizens of South Jersey need a real conservative in Congress who will work hard for smaller government, lower taxes and secure borders, and who will fight to protect, not undermine, their constitutional rights,” added Richter.
Richter is the former CEO of global construction management firm Hill International. A lifelong Republican, he grew up in and has spent most of his life living and working in South Jersey. He earned two bachelor’s degrees and a law degree from Penn as well as master’s degrees from Oxford and Harvard. Richter and his wife Michelle, who have been married for 20 years, are the parents of four daughters.
